Use These Tips to Stay Afloat During a Flood

If you look over national news sites, you’ll probably see multiple areas that have experienced floods recently. Flash floods are the most common weather disaster in the United States.
In honor of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month (NPM), we would like to share five flood disaster preparedness tips for you and your family.

  • #1. Create a Plan – The most important thing that you should do is create a family emergency plan. Take time to review it with your family. To help our clients with this step, Paul Davis has a Get a Plan form you can download at the link at the bottom of this post.
  • #2. Develop an Emergency Kit – Make sure you have the following items: a gallon of water per person, a first aid kit, battery-powered radio, signal whistle, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags, wrench, and local maps.
  • #3. Clean Your Gutters – Clear any debris from your gutters; to help water flow, it is vital that the drains are not clogged.
  • #4. Look at Flood Maps – It’s important to know if your house is in a flood area so you can obtain proper insurance. Click the link at the end of this post to see flood maps in Lincoln.
  • #5. Understand Flood Vocabulary – Know the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. A flood watch means that there is a possibility that a flood will happen in your area. A flood warning means that a flood is imminent and that you need to take action.
