August, the time to squeeze in last-minute vacations, get hyped for football season, and prepare for school to start. Whether you’re buying school supplies for your elementary student, prepping your teen for high school, or improving your own education, remember these few safety tips to this month run as smoothly as possible.

Slow in School Zone

Slow in School Zone

School Zones are for Kids

  • Follow the speed limit while in a school zone.
  • Obey crossing guards.
  • No matter which way you are driving, stop for buses and be very cautious of children.
  • Never pass other vehicles, make U-turns, or change lanes in a school zone.
  • Look out for children, especially near schools and parks.
  • Use a hands-free device if you need to make any calls.
  • Never text and drive.
  • Never park in handicap spaces unless licensed.

Walking to School

  • Look both ways before crossing the street and only use designated crosswalks.
  • Obey traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings.
  • Select the safest route between the school and your home and practice walking it with your children.
  • Instruct your children to:
  1. never get into a vehicle with anyone without your permission.
  2. walk to school with someone else.
  3. report the incident to you or a teacher immediately if another person asks them to get into a vehicle.

Teen Driving

  • Teen driving statistics are astounding!
  • “50% of all teens will be involved in a car crash before their high school graduation.” – NSC.org
  • “Car crashes are the top cause of death for U.S. teens – killing more than suicide, disease, and homicide combined.” – NSC.org
  • Teach your teens the basics of being a good driver. Use the resources below:
